According to the findings of this study, as compared to those with idiopathic ERM, diabetic patients would likely see continuing benefits from ERM surgery 6 to 12months post surgery. The BCVA changes of the two groups were similar. ILM peeling decreased ERM recurrence in the idiopathic group but not in the diabetic group.

The sludge samples were collected from the water plant (WTP), wastewater treatment plant (WWTP), and industrial water treatment plant (IPT) in Taiwan. The inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry was used to measure the trace metals in sludge. The pollution level and ecological risk criteria for heavy metals in sludge were also used to evaluate its reuse in agriculture. The result shows the average concentrations of trace metals in sludge for three groups (WTP, WWTP, and ITP). Significant correlations were found between concentrations of Zn-Ag (p  less then  0.001). The higher values of Igeo showed in ITP, indicated Hg to be a major pollutant. In Taiwan, the regulations did not establish the reuse of sludge in agriculture. However, the concentration level of trace metals in sludge was particularly lower than the regular levels in most groups, like WTP and WWTP groups. The industrial sludge was not recommended for the use in agriculture. The results of this study can be used for regular monitoring to establish a reference for sludge management and application to agriculture.

Viral agents are the most common cause of infectious anterior uveitis worldwide. The purpose of this review is to analyze the frequency, gender and racial differences of viral anterior uveitis (VAU) in various populations.

Systematized literature review of epidemiological reports of VAU cited in PubMed, EMBASE and the Cochrane Library database published until June 30th, 2020.

A total of 12 clinical studies on epidemiology of definite VAU and 36 clinical studies of presumed VAU were identified. Members of Herpesviridae family represent the most common causes of VAU. Other less frequently reported causes, such as rubella and endemic viruses (HTLV-1, Chikungunya, Dengue, Ebola, Zika virus) were also analyzed.

HSV, VZV are prevalent worldwide. CMV is more frequent in Asia, and rubella in the West. However, due to globalization and air travel, HTLV-1, Chikungunya, Dengue and Ebola may become important causes of VAU across the world.

Patients presenting with undifferentiated illnesses provide valuable learning opportunities for medical students. Evidence detailing the factors that affect patient participation in undergraduate medical education is limited. This study examines how patients regard their participation in teaching consultations in primary care.

We conducted a cross-sectional questionnaire survey in four GP practices. We tested the relationship between variables of interest and willingness to participate, using hierarchical logistic regression.

We analysed 525 questionnaires. 88% of respondents were willing to have students take part in their consultation, and 72% were willing to see a student alone before seeing the doctor. Older patients and those with less sensitive clinical problems were more likely to participate. ABT-263 clinical trial Willingness to participate was also associated with patients’ perceptions of certain costs and benefits of participation. Respondents had poor knowledge about medical education, and a sizeable minority perceived a lack of autonomy about the presence of students in their encounters. More than one-third of respondents expressed the presence of a clinician as a precondition for approval of students’ performing some active roles.

The findings have identified potential interventions to enhance patient involvement including patient education, respecting patient autonomy, and ensuring appropriate student supervision.

Deep learning, a branch of artificial intelligence that can learn image recognition based on pre-existing datasets, creates an opportunity for more accurate and efficient diagnosis, classification, and treatment of AMD on both individual and population levels. Current algorithms based on fundus photography and optical coherence tomography imaging have already achieved diagnostic accuracy levels comparable to human graders. This accuracy can be further increased when deep learning algorithms are simultaneously applied to multiple diagnostic imaging modalities. Combined with advances in telemedicine and imaging technology, deep learning can enable large populations of patients to be screened than would otherwise be possible and allow ophthalmologists to focus on seeing those patients who are in need of treatment, thus reducing the number of patients with significant visual impairment from AMD.Purpose To review the scientific literature on the comparison of the efficacy of different corneal collagen crosslinking (CXL) protocols for the treatment of progressive keratoconus. Methods Systematic review of randomized clinical trials (RCTs) on CXL outcomes. A search was carried out using the Cochrane Library, PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, Ovid MEDLINE, and Scopus databases. Internal validity was analyzed by applying the filter CASPe (Critical Appraisal Skills Program Spain). Results The search yielded 1151 articles, and among these, 14 articles met the inclusion and exclusion criteria defined. Conventional (S) crosslinking (CXL) provided better topographic outcomes than transepithelial (TE) CXL, and S-CXL had a better therapeutic effect of corneal flattening than accelerated (A) CXL. The corneal thinning after CXL was lower with hypotonic riboflavin than with riboflavin-dextran. While one study demonstrated a better therapeutic effect of corneal flattening with S-CXL than with A-CXL, another study showed similar results between both techniques.
