    Fusarium graminearum and F. culmorum applied as soilborne inoculum failed to cause severe disease. Microdochium spp. caused brown foot rot disease and soilborne M. nivale reduced wheat emergence. Applications of sedaxane and fludioxonil increased plant emergence and reduced damping-off, early stem-base disease, and brown foot rot, thus providing protection against multiple soilborne pathogens. Leaf (brown) rust, caused by Puccinia triticina, was the most prevalent among the three rusts found in all the wheat-growing areas of India, Bhutan, and Nepal during 2016 to 2019. Leaf rust samples from wheat crops in these countries were pathotyped using the wheat differential genotypes and binomial Indian system of nomenclature. To facilitate international communication, each pathotype identified was also tested using the North American differentials. A total of 33 pathotypes were identified from 1,086 samples, including three new pathotypes 61R47 (162-5 = KHTPM) and 93R49 (49 = NHKTN) from India and 93R57 (20-1 = NHKTN) from Nepal. Two pathotypes, 121R60-1 (77-9/52 = MHTKL) and 121R63-1 (77-5 = THTTM), accounted for 79.46% of the population. Virulence on Lr19 was identified in 0.27% of the samples from Nepal only. The proportion of pathotype 121R60-1 (77-9 = MHTKL) increased to 57.55% during these years. Virulence was not observed on Lr9, Lr24, Lr25, Lr28, Lr32, Lr39, Lr45, and Lr47 in the population of the Indian subcontinent. Eighteen polymorphic simple sequence repeat (SSR) primer pairs tested on the isolates amplified 48 alleles with an average of 2.66 alleles per primer pair. With the increasing demand for feed, alfalfa has been planted all over China. However, an increasingly serious alfalfa disease was observed and may restrict the development of the alfalfa industry in North China. In August 2019, an emerging alfalfa disease with symptoms resembling southern blight was observed in Jiaozhou experimental base (Jiaozhou Modern Agricultural Science and Technology Demonstration Park) of Qingdao Agricultural University (Qindao, Shandong province, China). The infected plants showed dark brown lesions on the stems and yellowing and wilting of the leaves. The pathogen produced white fluffy mycelia, and later sclerotia on stems and roots; the disease affected up to 25% of the plants and causes bare spots filled with weeds (Figure S1). Typical symptomatic tissues were brought back to the laboratory for pathogen isolation and identificaield were observed on inoculated plants, whereas those control plants were symptomless (Figure S2). S. rolfsii was successfully re-isolated from the inoculated plants and molecularly characterized as described above. Based on disease symptoms, fungal colonies, the ITS and EF1a sequence, and pathogenicity to the host, this fungus was identified as S. rolfsii (teleomorph Athelia rolfsii). To our knowledge, this is the first report of S. rolfsii as the causal agent of southern blight of alfalfa in North China, and it is also the first report of southern blight on alfalfa caused by S. rolfsii in China since 1996 observed in Guizhou province (Mo and Luo 1996).Field experiments were established in the 2018/19 and 2019/20 growing seasons at the experimental station in Neu-Eichenberg, Hessen, Germany to examine the suitability of multiple wheat cultivars for intercropping with pea and the effect of mixtures on diseases. Approximately 600 wheat tillers (BBCH 49-61, depending on the year and cultivar) were sampled in each year and assessed for severity of foot (lower stem) rot symptoms. Fungi from plants with Fusarium-like symptoms exhibiting reddish-brown discolorations on the stems were isolated following the methods described in Šišić et al. (2018). Surface disinfected (3% NaOCl for 10s) wheat stems and roots were cut into three 1 cm long pieces and placed on COONS agar (Coons, 1916). Following 7 – 12 days of incubation under constant blacklight blue fluorescent light, pure cultures were generated on potato dextrose and synthetic nutrient-poor agar (Nirenberg, 1976) using the hyphal tip transfer technique, and the resulting colonies examined microscopically. In addition, it is important to note that our results contrast the results from previous studies (Farr and Rossman, 2021) which reported F. venenatum primarily as a soil saprophyte and presumably non-pathogenic fungus in its nature. Our findings thus, also warrant the need to further investigate pathogenic potential of this species and the role it may play on other common rotational crops in Germany.Phenomenon The format of medical knowledge assessment can promote students’ use of effective learning strategies from the learning sciences literature, such as elaboration, interleaving, retrieval practice, and distributed learning. Assessment format can also influence faculty teaching. Accordingly, our institution implemented a new assessment strategy in which pre-clerkship medical students answered weekly formative quizzes with constructed response questions (also referred to as open-ended questions) and multiple-choice questions in preparation for summative open-ended question examinations, to support students’ use of recommended learning strategies. Our qualitative study explored medical student and faculty perceptions of this assessment strategy on learning and teaching. Approach We conducted semi-structured interviews with 16 second-year medical students to explore their preparation for quizzes and summative examinations. We also interviewed 10 faculty responsible for writing and grading these assessments in the pre-clerkship foundational sciences curriculum regarding their approach to writing assessments and rubrics, and their perceptions of how their teaching may have changed with this assessment strategy.
