These novel tools for minimally invasive evaluation of OOR in a clinical setting could potentially enable us to quantitatively evaluate peripheral static disequilibrium.Chronic low-grade inflammation in type 1 diabetes (T1D) might increase hepcidin synthesis, possibly resulting in functional iron deficiency (FID). We hypothesized that in T1D children with FID, hepcidin concentrations are increased compared to those with normal iron status and those with absolute iron deficiency (AID). We evaluated hepcidin concentrations in T1D children in relation to iron status, and investigated whether hepcidin is useful in assessing FID. A cross-sectional study was conducted. FID was defined as elevated zinc protoporphyrin/heme ratio and/or red blood cell distribution width, and AID as low serum ferritin concentration. Post-hoc analyses with different definitions of FID were performed, using transferrin saturation and reticulocyte hemoglobin content. Serum hepcidin concentrations were measured using mass-spectrometry. The IRODIAB-study is registered at http://www.trialregister.nl (NTR4642). This study included 215 T1D children with a median age of 13.7 years (Q1-Q3 10.1-16.3). The median (Q1-Q3) hepcidin concentration in patients with normal iron status was 1.8 nmol/l (0.9-3.3), in AID-patients, 0.4 nmol/l (0.4-0.4) and in FID-patients, 1.6 nmol/l (0.7-3.5). Hepcidin concentrations in FID-patients were significantly higher than in AID-patients (p less then 0.001). Irrespective of FID-definition used, hepcidin concentrations did not differ between FID-patients and patients with normal iron status. This might be explained by the influence of various factors on hepcidin concentrations, and/or by differences in response of iron parameters over time. Single hepcidin measurements do not seem useful in assessing FID in T1D children. Multiple hepcidin measurements over time in future studies, however, might prove to be more useful in assessing FID in children with T1D.Songbirds produce complex vocalizations by coordinating neuromuscular control of syrinx, respiratory system, and upper vocal tract. The functional roles of syringeal muscles have been documented mainly with correlative data, which have suggested that synergistic activation plays a role in the fine control of vocal features. However, the specific involvement of individual muscles in achieving this fine control is still largely unknown. Here we investigate the contributions of the two main airflow controlling muscles, the dorsal and ventral tracheobronchial muscles in the zebra finch, through a new approach. Ablation of the muscle insertion on the cartilage framework reveals detailed insights into their respective roles in the fine control of song features. Unilateral ablation of a tracheobronchial muscle resulted in mostly subtle changes of the air sac pressure pattern and song features. Effects of ablation varied with the acoustic elements, thus indicating a context-dependent specific synergistic activation ouption of airflow regulation affects bilateral coordination. The results of this study illustrate that the gating muscles serve multiple functions in control of acoustic features and give further insight into the complex motor control of birdsong.
Brain-computer interface (BCI)-functional electronic stimulation (FES) systems are increasingly being explored as potential neuro-rehabilitation tools. Here, we investigate the effect of action observation training (AOT) plus electroencephalogram (EEG)-based BCI-controlled FES system on motor recovery of upper extremity and cortical activation in patients with stroke.
There were a total of 26 patients an AOT plus BCI-FES group (n=13) and a control group (n=13). The control group performed FES treatment and the conventional physical therapy, while the AOT plus BCI-FES group performed AOT plus BCI-FES and the conventional physical therapy. Upper extremity performance was measured using the Fugl-Meyer Assessment of the Upper Extremity (FMA-UE), Wolf Motor Function Test (WMFT), Motor Activity Log (MAL) and Modified Barthel Index (MBI). c-Met inhibitor Cortical activation was measured using electro-encephalographic recordings from alpha and beta power, concentration, and activation.
After intervention, there were significant differences between two groups in FMA-UE, WMFT, MAL and MBI and the results of EEG including alpha power, beta power, concentration and activation.
This study demonstrated that AOT plus BCI-FES can enhance motor function of upper extremity and cortical activation in patients with stroke. This training method may be feasible and suitable for individuals with stroke.

The present systematic review was conducted to investigate the effect of the self-assembling peptide (SAP) – P
-4 in the remineralization of enamel caries.
The systematic search for studies was conducted through CINAHL, EMBASE, MEDLINE, Scopus, PsychINFO, and various key journals. This review was conducted in adherence to PRISMA standards and was registered in PROSPERO with registration number CRD42019110156. The methodological quality of the studies was graded through Cochrane’s tool of risk of bias in non-randomized studies – of interventions (ROBINS-I).
In total, 91 studies were identified for screening, and 12 studies were eligible. Ten studies showed effective enamel remineralization with P
-4 compared to controls. One study showed a combination of P
-4 with fluoride varnish or Casein Phosphopeptide-Amorphous Calcium Phosphate Fluoride (CPP-ACPF) leads to significantly higher remineralization compared to P
-4 alone. Quality assessment of study showed 6 (50%) studies as medium risk of bias and 6 (50%) studies as low risk of bias.
To conclude, the present study results showed SAP- P
-4 is effective in the remineralization of enamel caries.
