Conclusions Training with a 150% eccentric overload provides a ~ 30% greater motor unit recruitment of the VL muscle in leg press exercise. Moreover, the results show that the eccentric overloading provided by the Biostrength® machine enables training at the same level of neural activation of the concentric phase. Hence, the derecruitment of motor units, normally observed during the eccentric phase when using conventional training machines, was overcome using the Biostrength® machine; this observation seems particularly important for maximizing neuromuscular responses to strength training.Leptolyngbya boryana (L. boryana) is a typical filamentous cyanobacterium that is widely distributed in aquatic ecosystems and is considered to play an important role in the arsenic biogeochemical cycle. Our results showed that L. boryana resisted arsenite (As(III)) and arsenate (As(V)) concentrations up to 0.25 mM and 5 mM, respectively. When exposed to 100 μM As(III) or As(V) for 4 weeks, L. boryana accumulated as much arsenic as 570.0 mg kg-1 and 268.5 mg kg-1, respectively. After the 4-week exposure to As(III) and As(V), organoarsenicals including dimethylarsenate (DMAs(V)) and oxo-arsenosugar-phosphate (Oxo-PO4) were detected in the cells of L. boryana, while inorganic arsenic, especially As(V), was still the main species in both the cells and medium. Furthermore, arsenic oxidation was observed to be solely caused by L. boryana cells and was considered the dominant detoxification pathway. In conclusion, due to its powerful arsenic accumulation, biotransformation, and detoxification abilities, L. boryana might play an important role in arsenic remediation in aquatic environments.The question of whether some cases of interstitial cystitis may have an infectious etiology has been debated for some time. Previous studies have looked for the presence of certain specific viruses, but generally did not use the types of sensitive and unbiased approaches that are currently available. As part of the MAPP (Multidisciplinary Approach to the Study of Chronic Pelvic Pain) Research Network, we examined urine specimens from interstitial cystitis patients who provided specimens over time and also reported various symptoms at the time of urine collection. We first performed next-generation sequencing to look for the presence of viruses in urines, and detected two human polyomaviruses that are known to be excreted into urine, BKPyV and JCPyV. Providers should consider local anesthetic resistance when regional anesthesia is unsuccessful. Further research is needed to determine if skin wheal tests and/or a different local anesthetic could improve results.Background Schmallenberg virus (SBV) is an orthobunyavirus, carried by Culicoides biting midges, that causes reproductive problems in adult ruminants when infected during their gestation period. SBV was first detected in ruminants in the UK in 2011/2012 and then again in 2016. The reason behind the 2016 re-emergence of SBV is unknown, but one possibility is that it can be maintained in wildlife, such as deer. SBV has been detected at high seroprevalence in deer in a number of European countries, but only once in the UK in a single region. Methods The purpose of this study was to survey wild deer across Great Britain for recent evidence of SBV. Deer hunters were recruited for the purpose of providing postmortem blood samples to be tested for SBV antibodies. Results The seroprevalence of SBV in the British wild deer population was 13.8 per cent; found in red, roe, muntjac and fallow deer species, with more in deer further south. Conclusion These results support the growing concern that SBV is now endemic in Great Britain and highlight the need to know the role of wildlife in SBV transmission.Purpose The purpose of this review is to quantify the landscape of current clinical trials ongoing for therapies in the treatment of COVID-19. A secondary purpose is to examine the relationship between public and scientific interests in potential therapies for COVID-19. Methods A systematic search of clinicaltrials.gov was undertaken on April 22, 2020, to identify all currently registered clinical trials investigating potential therapies for patients with COVID-19. Public interest in the various therapies was quantified utilizing Google Trends. Public interest in hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine was plotted against the cumulative number of active clinical trials evaluating antimalarials as potential COVID-19 therapies over time. Results There were 341 interventional studies and 208 different therapies actively registered on clinicaltrials.gov whose primary aim is the treatment of COVID-19. The median sample size was 120 patients (range 4-6000) with 154 (45%) trials reporting a planned sample size of 100 patients or less. There was a strong positive correlation (r = 0.76, p = 0.01) between the number of registered clinical trials and the public interest in the top ten proposed therapies. Following the spike in public interest, the average number of new trials increased tenfold with respect to antimalarial therapies. Conclusions The relatively small sample sizes and the number of independent trials investigating similar therapies are concerning. Resources may not be being allocated based on scientific merit and may be driven by public consciousness and speculation. Moving forward, a concerted effort focused on implementing large, well-coordinated and carefully designed multi-armed clinical trials will help to ensure that the most promising therapeutic options are rigorously studied and clinically meaningful results produced.
