    In the estuary and in the nutrient-dense western part of the lake, some eutrophic conditions preferring cyanobacteria (filamentous Anabaena and Aphanizomenon species) were also detectable. The benthic microbial community showed higher diversity, according to the observed appearance of microorganisms adapted to the deeper, less aerated layers (e.g. members of Desulfobacteraceae, Nitrosomonadaceae).

    As cancer treatments continue to improve, the incidence of spinal metastases and the need for surgical management of these with fixation procedures are growing rapidly. Traditionally metallic implants, composed of titanium alloy, have been used in surgical fixation of unstable or symptomatic vertebral metastases or traumatic injuries. Metallic implants, however, cause significant artifact on post-operative imaging, degrading image quality and limiting interpretation, and can also impair the planning and delivery of radiotherapy. Composite carbon fiber-based materials, such as carbon fiber-reinforced polyetheretherketone (PEEK), have been developed to overcome these issues and are now available for spinal fixation procedures. We aimed to review the multimodal imaging features of these new implants.

    Current literature and a case example from our institution were used to describe the multimodal imaging characteristics and considerations of new carbon fiber-based spinal fixation implants.

    New carbon fiber-based spinal implants allow far greater visualization of surrounding structures on post-operative cross-sectional imaging, significantly improving diagnostic accuracy and precision of radiotherapy planning, and do not significantly absorb or scatter X-ray photons during radiotherapy delivery. There are, however, important surgical and radiologic considerations associated with the use of carbon fiber-based implants which radiologists must be aware of, such as implications for surgical planning and intra-operative fluoroscopic and post-operative plain radiographic imaging.

Biofortified maize rich in proA provides new opportunity for sustainable and cost-effective solution to alleviate malnutrition, however, significant loss of carotenoids during storage reduces its efficacy. Here, we studied the role of carotenoid cleavage dioxygenase 1 (ccd1) gene on degradation of carotenoids in maize. A set of 24 maize inbreds was analyzed for retention of proA during storage. At harvest, crtRB1-based maize inbreds possessed significantly high proA (β-carotene 12.30 µg/g, β-cryptoxanthin 4.36 µg/g) than the traditional inbreds (β-carotene 1.74 µg/g, β-cryptoxanthin 1.28 µg/g). However, crtRB1-based inbreds experienced significant degradation of proA carotenoids (β-carotene 20%, β-cryptoxanthin 32% retention) following 5 months. Among the crtRB1-based genotypes, V335PV had the lowest retention of proA (β-carotene 1.63 µg/g, β-cryptoxanthin 0.82 µg/g), while HKI161PV had the highest retention of proA (β-carotene 4.17 µg/g, β-cryptoxanthin 2.32 µg/g). Periodical analysis revealed that ~ 60-70% of proA degraded during the first three months. Expression analysis revealed that high expression of ccd1 led to low retention of proA carotenoids in V335PV, whereas proA retention in HKI161PV was higher due to lower expression. Highest expression of ccd1 was observed during first 3 months of storage. Copy number of ccd1 gene varied among yellow maize (1-6 copies) and white maize (7-35 copies) while wild relatives contained 1-4 copies of ccd1 gene per genome. However, copy number of ccd1 gene did not exhibit any correlation with proA carotenoids. We concluded that lower expression of ccd1 gene increased the retention of proA during storage in maize. selleckchem Favourable allele of ccd1 can be introgressed into elite maize inbreds for higher retention of proA during storage.

    In recent years the number of caesarean sections has increased worldwide for different reasons. to review the scientific evidence relating to the impact of the type of delivery on pelvic floor disorders (PFDs) such as urinary and faecal incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse.

    A review of systematic reviews and meta-analysis, drawn from the following databases MEDLINE (via PubMed), Scopus, Web of Science, The Cochrane Library and LILACS (Literatura Latinoamericana y del Caribe en Ciencias de la Salud/Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature) prior to January 2019. The directives of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses were used in assessing article quality.

    Eleven systematic reviews were evaluated, 6 of which found a significantly decreased risk of urinary incontinence associated with caesarean section and 3 meta-analyses showed a significant reduction in POP for caesarean section, compared with vaginal delivery. Of 5 reviews that examined delivery type and faecal incontinence, only one indicated a lower incidence of faecal incontinence associated with caesarean delivery. However, most of the studies included in these reviews were not adjusted for important confounding factors and the risk of PFDs was not analysed by category of caesarean delivery (elective or urgent).

    When compared with vaginal delivery, caesarean is associated with a reduced risk of urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse. These results should be interpreted with caution and do not help to address the question of whether elective caesareans are protective of the maternal pelvic floor.
