3%, and the rate constant (kobs) increased from 0.104 h-1 to 0.197 h-1. High-temperature BC promoted the electrons release of Fe0 and the generation of [H], and its conductivity improved the electron utilization efficiency so that the dechlorination reaction could proceed both on the surface of nZVI/Pd particles and BC, thereby promoting the dechlorination of PCB1. Therefore, adsorption effect dominated degradability of PCB1 sequestrated by low-temperature BC, while for high-temperature BC, synergistic catalytic effect played a dominant role. These findings indicate that reductive efficiency of nZVI should be systematically evaluated according to different types of BC in soil/sediment.Marine bivalves living in pollution-prone coastal areas may be simultaneously coexposed to veterinary antibiotic residuals and microplastics (MPs). However, the synergistic effects of these two types of emergent pollutants have not been fully elucidated in mussel species. Therefore, the immunotoxic effects of the three representative antibiotics, oxytetracycline (OTC, 270 ng/L), florfenicol (FLO, 42 ng/L), and sulfamethoxazole (SMX, 140 ng/L), with and without the copresence of polystyrene MPs (0.26 mg/L, dimeter 500 nm), were investigated in the thick shell mussel. Our data showed that the immunity was significantly hampered by exposure to the pollutants and MP-antibiotic coexposure induced synergistic immunotoxicity. For instance, compared to those treated with antibiotics (OTC, FLO, and SMX) alone, mussels coexposed to antibiotic and MPs had significantly lower phagocytic rate (further decline by approximately 28.80%, 34.21%, and 11.22%, respectively) and total hemocyte count (further reduced by approximately 37.45%, 61.67%, and 46.32%, respectively). Exposure to the pollutants tested also led to inductions in intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS), decreases in the F-actin cytoskeleton, declines in the cell viability of hemocytes, and downregulation of cytoskeleton- and immune-related genes. In addition, mussels coexposed to antibiotic-MP accumulated significantly greater amounts of antibiotics, which may partially explain the synergic immunotoxic effect detected. Exposure to pollutants tested also led to suppression in the activity of glutathione-S-transferase (GST) and downregulation of detoxification-related genes whereas induction in the level of lipid peroxidation (indicated by MDA content) in gills, which may facilitate the entry whereas constrain the exclusion of antibiotics and therefore result in an elevation in accumulation of antibiotics.Antidepressants are among the most commonly detected pharmaceuticals in the aquatic environment. As they modulate neurotransmission in nervous systems, behavioural abnormalities among aquatic species are of concern. It is possible to measure the concentrations of selected antidepressants by chemical analysis, but other non-target antidepressants and active metabolites might also be present. Here, we propose an “in vitro monoamine transporter inhibition assay” to measure the biological activity of antidepressants, particularly monoamine transporter inhibitors, in wastewater. selleck chemical We used APP, a fluorescent substrate for monoamine transporters, to measure the activity of wastewater extracts at inhibiting APP uptake through the human serotonin transporter (hSERT), norepinephrine transporter (hNET), and dopamine transporter, and the zebrafish SERT (zSERT). We confirmed that the assay could measure the biological activity of test antidepressants. Interestingly, the IC50 values of antidepressants (the concentration that gave a 50% reduction of APP uptake) for the zSERT were smaller than those for the hSERT. For example, IC50 value of desipramine for the zSERT was 1/200 of that for the hSERT. These results indicate that antidepressants inhibited zSERT more strongly than hSERT. Then we applied the assay to extracts of effluent from municipal wastewater treatment plants and detected biological activity of antidepressants specifically against the hSERT, hNET, and zSERT for the first time. For the hSERT, antidepressant-equivalent quantities (EQs) ranged from 2.2 × 101 to 2.5 × 102 ng-clomipramine-EQ/L. For the hNET, EQs ranged from below limit of detection to 8.2 × 101 ng-desipramine-EQ/L. For the zSERT, EQs ranged from 2.8 × 102 to 3.3 × 102 ng-duloxetine-EQ/L. The in vitro monoamine transporter inhibition assay is thus useful for measuring the biological activity of antidepressants in the aquatic environment.

COVID-19 pandemic has posed an unprecedented pressure on health systems and economies worldwide. Delivery services have grown as an alternative source of revenue for many people. Consumers generally perceive that delivery services are safer than going into a restaurant, because they reduce exposure to other people and their risk of SARS-CoV-2 contagion. There are no studies analyzing viral load or the burden of COID-19 within this population. This study aims to describe the presence of SARS-CoV-2 among food delivery riders in the city of Quito, Ecuador.

From July and August 2020, bike and motorbike riders self-employed in two of the main online delivery services in Quito, Ecuador, were invited for RT-PCR testing for SARS-CoV-2 detection during the compulsory lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) 2019-Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV) RT-qPCR Diagnostic Panel was used to identify the presence of SARS-CoV-2 in nasopharyngeal swabs. All samples were processed in the BSL2 cerlients, including vulnerable populations such as the elderly or those less likely to leave their house for basic needs stoking.

The self-employed food delivery riders have a high incidence rate of SARS-CoV-2 infection in relation to the national average. It is important to point out that this is the first study of its kind in Latin-American and probably one of the very few in the world. The results emphasize the need for policy makers to look at the pandemic from as many population’s sub-groups as possible. Delivery riders are a highly moving population that offer their services to a wide range of clients, including vulnerable populations such as the elderly or those less likely to leave their house for basic needs stoking.
