Compared to those without depression, acutely-ill patients with depression hospitalized for an infection usually have poor outcomes, including increased length of stay (LOS).

The primary objective was to evaluate the LOS between patients receiving an anti-infective with and without any antidepressant use. Secondary objectives were to examine LOS based on acuity of care and age.

Using a cross-sectional design, hospitalized adult patients who received anti-infective agents between January 1, 2017 and October 31, 2019 for ≥7 days were included. Univariate and multivariate analyses were conducted to determine statistical significance.

A total of 17,651 patient encounters were included in the study. Of all patient encounters, 5165 (29%) received antidepressants concurrently with anti-infectives, with mean age of 57 years±17.3. Patients receiving concurrent antidepressants experienced longer LOS compared with patients not receiving antidepressants [20 vs 16 days, 95% confident interval (CI) 3.98-5.18, p<0.0d with an infection.

Converging evidence has identified the imbalance between goal-directed systems and habitual systems in the addiction process. The thalamocortical loop plays an important role in the habitual/goal-directed system. However, little is known about the role of the thalamus in goal-directed and habitual systems in Internet gaming disorder (IGD) patients. This study investigated whether thalamocortical circuit was disrupted and how they affected goal-directed and habitual behaviors in IGD patients.

This is a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study. Twenty-five IGD patients and 25 matched recreational game users (RGUs) were scanned when they were in a resting state and were performing an instrumental learning task to obtain behavioral data related to habitual/goal-directed behavior. JH-RE-06 inhibitor We used the whole-brain seed-based functional connectivity (FC) of the four thalamic nuclei (bilateral) and correlation analyses to examine the thalamocortical loop difference and relationship with habitual/goal-directed pe that could further result in an imbalance between the goal-directed and habitual systems in IGD patients. These findings provide more information about the involvement of the thalamus in the pathophysiology of IGD, and as potential circuit-level biomarkers of IGD patients, these circuit alterations may be useful in treatment development and in monitoring treatment outcomes.Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is an often disabling mental disorder whose management typically focuses on reducing PTSD symptoms. Chronic pain and other comorbidities that commonly accompany PTSD symptoms may also be independently associated with disability. Using data from the 2012-2013 National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions, we examined the independent association of PTSD symptom severity, pain interference, non-PTSD psychiatric and substance use disorders (SUD), and medical illnesses with each of four domains of function mental health-related quality of life and physical functioning assessed with the Mental Health Composite Score (MCS) and Physical Function Score (PFS) of the Short Form-12; perceived social support from the Interpersonal Support and Evaluation List-12 (ISEL-12); and self-reported past year employment. Among 1779 individuals representing 11 million U.S. adults who met the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual-5 (DSM-5) criteria for Past Year PTSD, the MCS (41.2; SD 12.5), PFS (44.8; SD 13.2) and ISEL-12 (33.6; SD 7.2) indicated substantial disability when compared to population norms, and only 63.6% were employed. Multiple regression showed the MCS had a modest negative association with PTSD symptoms, pain interference, psychiatric multimorbidity and medical comorbidity although not with SUD. PFS and employment had significant negative associations with pain interference and medical comorbidity. ISEL-12 had a weak negative association with PTSD symptoms and non-PTSD psychiatric comorbidity. Common comorbidities thus significantly influence disability associated with PTSD, often more strongly than PTSD symptoms. PTSD treatment may require integrative multimorbidity management beyond a focus on PTSD symptoms.

Craving and cognitive deficits are potential treatment targets for methamphetamine use disorder (MUD). Previous studies implied that transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and cognitive training respectively improve these symptoms, but the combined effect is unknown. In this study, we investigated the combined effects of tDCS over dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) and computerized cognitive addiction therapy (CCAT) on cue-induced craving and cognitive functions among female individuals with MUD.

Seventy-five patients with MUD were randomly assigned to three groups CCAT+tDCS group, CCAT+sham tDCS group and the control group. The former two groups received 20 sessions of cognitive training combined 1.5mA active/sham tDCS over DLPFC (20min/session, 5times/week), while the control group received usual care which includes routine medical care, health education, physical exercises and psychological support related to relapse prevention. The cue-induced craving and cognitive functions were tested atesearch is needed to explore the underlying mechanism.”Humanized” immunodeficient mice generated via the transplantation of CD34+ human hematopoietic stem cells (hHSC) are an important preclinical model system. The triple transgenic NOD.Cg-PrkdcscidIl2rgtm1Wjl Tg(CMV-IL3,CSF2,KITLG)1Eav/MloySzJ (NSGS) mouse line is increasingly used as recipient for CD34+ hHSC engraftment. NSGS mice combine the features of the highly immunodeficient NSG mice with transgenic expression of the human myeloid stimulatory cytokines GM-CSF, IL-3, and Kit ligand. While generating humanized NSGS (huNSGS) mice from two independent cohorts, we encountered a fatal macrophage activation syndrome (MAS)-like phenotype resulting from the transplantation of CD34+ hHSC. huNSGS mice exhibiting this phenotype declined clinically starting at approximately 10 weeks following CD34+ hHSC engraftment, with all mice requiring euthanasia by 16 weeks. Gross changes comprised small, irregular liver, splenomegaly, cardiomegaly, and generalized pallor. Hematological abnormalities included severe thrombocytopenia and anemia.
