Despite the semi-natural conditions of the present study, we detected changing selection pressure in one of the 14 microsatellite markers. © 2020 Molnár et al.Purpose The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of anterior pelvic ring fixation alone for treating lateral compression type 1 (LC-1) fractures with nondisplaced complete sacral fractures. Methods Patients with LC-1 type pelvic fractures with nondisplaced complete sacral fractures in the Xi’an Honghui Hospital were screened. Those who underwent surgical treatment for the anterior pelvic ring fractures and conservative treatment for the sacral factures were included in the analysis. The Majeed and Short Form-12 (SF-12) functional scores were used to evaluate these patients. Results Of the 123 patients enrolled, 108 (88%) responded to our enquiries regarding the outcome. The mean follow-up period was 18.37 months for the 108 patients who responded. The mean SF-12 functional score was 48.22 ± 9.68. The mean Majeed score was 83.47 ± 9.23, including 52 with excellent, 47 with good, seven with fair, two with poor outcomes. The SF-12 functional and Majeed scores were significantly higher in those aged less then 45 years or without lower limb injury than in those aged ≥45 years or with lower limb injury (P less then 0.05). Conclusion Acceptable functional outcomes can be obtained for LC-1 pelvic fractures with nondisplaced complete sacral fractures by using anterior pelvic ring fixation alone. ©2020 Shang et al.Members of a society interact using a variety of social behaviors, giving rise to a multi-faceted and complex social life. For the study of animal behavior, quantifying this complexity is critical for understanding the impact of social life on animals’ health and fitness. Multilayer network approaches, where each interaction type represents a different layer of the social network, have the potential to better capture this complexity than single layer approaches. Calculating individuals’ centrality within a multilayer social network can reveal keystone individuals and more fully characterize social roles. However, existing measures of multilayer centrality do not account for differences in the dynamics and functionality across interaction layers. Here we validate a new method for quantifying multiplex centrality called consensus ranking by applying this method to multiple social groups of a well-studied nonhuman primate, the rhesus macaque. Consensus ranking can suitably handle the complexities of animal sociaore central, showing that consideration of multiple social domains revealed individuals whose social centrality and importance might otherwise have been missed. ©2020 Beisner et al.Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) trained on natural images are extremely successful in image classification and localization due to superior automated feature extraction capability. In extending their use to biomedical recognition tasks, it is important to note that visual features of medical images tend to be uniquely different than natural images. There are advantages offered through training these networks on large scale medical common modality image collections pertaining to the recognition task. Further, improved generalization in transferring knowledge across similar tasks is possible when the models are trained to learn modality-specific features and then suitably repurposed for the target task. In this study, we propose modality-specific ensemble learning toward improving abnormality detection in chest X-rays (CXRs). Tat-BECN1 order CNN models are trained on a large-scale CXR collection to learn modality-specific features and then repurposed for detecting and localizing abnormalities. Model predictions are combined using different ensemble strategies toward reducing prediction variance and sensitivity to the training data while improving overall performance and generalization. Class-selective relevance mapping (CRM) is used to visualize the learned behavior of the individual models and their ensembles. It localizes discriminative regions of interest (ROIs) showing abnormal regions and offers an improved explanation of model predictions. It was observed that the model ensembles demonstrate superior localization performance in terms of Intersection of Union (IoU) and mean Average Precision (mAP) metrics than any individual constituent model. ©2020 Rajaraman et al.Background Leucojum aestivum L. is an important medicinal plant which produces Amaryllidaceae alkaloids, especially galanthamine and lycorine. Research is currently exploring the possibility of producing these alkaloids using biotechnological methods, including in vitro cultures. The biosynthesis of alkaloids may be affected by the types and concentrations of carbohydrate sources used in the medium. In the present investigation we performed such studies on in vitro cultures of L. aestivum with a view to obtaining plant material of good quality, characterized, in particular, by a high content of valuable Amaryllidaceae alkaloids. Methods We examined the effects of various types of carbohydrate sources-sucrose, glucose, fructose and maltose-at different concentrations (30, 60 and 90 g/L)-on the quality of L. aestivum plants grown in the RITA® bioreactor. The plants’ quality was assessed by their biomass increments, as well by as analysing photosynthetic pigments, endogenous sugar, phenolics and Amaryllidaceae aured in the medium containing 60 g/L sucrose. Six Amaryllidaceae alkaloids were detected in the plant tissue. The addition of 30 g/L fructose in the medium resulted in the accumulation of five alkaloids, including ismine, which was not identified in other analysed tissues. The highest concentration of galanthamine was observed in plants cultured in the presence of 30 g/L fructose and 60 g/L sucrose (39.2 and 37.5 µg/g of dry weight (DW), respectively). The plants grown in the medium containing 60 g/L sucrose exhibited the highest lycorine content (1048 µg/g of DW). Conclusions The type and concentration of sugar used in the medium have an essential influence on the biosynthesis of Amaryllidaceae alkaloids in L. aestivum plants cultured in a RITA® bioreactor. The results point to an interesting approach for commercial production of galanthamine and lycorine. © 2020 Ptak et al.
