To elucidate the prevalence and risk factors of chronic postsurgical pain (CPSP) after primary total knee arthroplasty (TKA) in Japanese population.

Consecutive patients undergoing primary TKA in a Japanese tertiary hospital (211 knees) were assessed. CPSP after TKA was defined as moderate to severe pain (VAS >30 mm), either at rest or during walking, one year after surgery. Clinical and radiographic data were compared between CPSP and non-CPSP groups and multivariate logistic regression was used to identify predictors of CPSP.

The prevalence of CPSP was 8.8%. CPSP group showed significantly higher preoperative WOMAC subscales (pain, function and stiffness), higher rate of postoperative coronal malalignment (femorotibial angle >178° or <170°) and larger varus angle of tibial component compared with non-CPSP group. Logistic regression analysis revealed that preoperative higher WOMAC pain and postoperative coronal malalignment were independent risk factors of CPSP. In a subgroup analysis of patients with well-aligned TKA, preoperative pain VAS at rest was the only risk factor of CPSP.

Preoperative severe pain and postoperative coronal malalignment were independent risk factors of CPSP after TKA. Preoperative pain management in patients with severe pain and good coronal alignment after TKA possibly minimize the development of CPSP.

Clinical trials and extensive studies are being conducted on a large scale for a better understanding of the pathophysiology of this disease and its effect on different organs. Several experimental treatment protocols have been introduced, in which hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) was one of the first drugs used. While patients can develop many side effects of HCQ, studies have documented a rare association of long-term HCQ treatment with zebra-like bodies in the ultrastructural examination of kidney biopsies, a finding typically seen in Fabry’s disease, as well as in association with chronic HCQ use, among other drugs. MitoPQ price We present a similar finding in the postmortem examination of a male in his early seventies with COVID-19 infection, who received five days of HCQ treatment before stopping the medication due to cardiac and renal toxicity.

Stigma and discrimination have been associated with different diseases and pandemics, with negative consequences for the people who suffered them and for their communities. Currently, COVID-19 has become a new source of stigmatization.

The aim of the present study is to analyze longitudinally the evolution of intersectional perceived discrimination and internalized stigma among the general population of Spain, at three points in time throughout the confinement.

    Participants completed an online survey.

Results show an increase in both variables from the first to the second evaluation, and a slight decrease from the second to the third evaluation. Moreover, these changes are explained by depression, anxiety and family support.

These findings indicate the factors that need to be considered to reduce the perception of discrimination and the internalization of stigma, and their detrimental consequences, during an especially stressful event such as the current pandemic outbreak.

We investigated which information is used for such estimates. In Experiment 1 (N = 25), we tested the influence of slope and noise on perceived fit between a linear model and data points. Additionally, eye tracking was used to analyze the deployment of attention. Visual fit estimation might mimic one or the other statistical estimate If participants were influenced by noise only, this would suggest that their subjective judgment was similar to root mean square error. If slope was relevant, subjective estimation would mimic variance explained. While the influence of noise on estimated fit was stronger, we also found an influence of slope. As most of the fixations fell into the center of the scatterplot, in Experiment 2 (N = 51), we tested whether location of noise affects judgment. Indeed, high noise influenced the judgment of fit more strongly if it was located in the middle of the scatterplot. Visual fit estimates seem to be driven by the center of the scatterplot and to mimic variance explained.Recent work in attentional control has suggested that conflict effects measured across different tasks are not reliable and by extension unrelated. The lack of correlation between these conflict effects is in juxtaposition not only to theoretical predictions of a domain-general attentional control mechanism but also to a large body of individual differences research that has used these tasks to show evidence for an attentional control construct and its relatedness to other psychological constructs. In an effort to address this, we fit hierarchical models to each task that modeled trial-to-trial variability in response times to assess the extent to which the parameter estimates for the conflict effect correlated across tasks. We compared this method of assessing shared variance to more traditional summed difference score estimates of the conflict effect by analyzing data from a large-scale individual differences experiment, in which N = 582 subjects completed a Stroop, Flanker, and Simon task. Across tasks, we found that while the reliability of the conflict was sufficiently high and the between-task conflict effect significantly correlated, the magnitude of the between-task correlation was low. We discuss the implications of these results as providing more support for a domain-specific than domain-general attentional control mechanism.
