    This work describes an ultrasound-assisted dispersive solid-phase extraction method combined with reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography-photodiode array detection (UADSPE-RPLC-PDA) for the determination of nine common biogenic amines (BAs) in canned seafood. The pretreatment extraction solvent, ultrasonic treatment duration, and derivatization conditions were optimized. The method was validated on the basis of the limit of detection (LOD), limit of quantification (LOQ), precision, and accuracy and successfully applied to analyze four canned fish, two canned shrimp and four canned shellfish samples. LODs of 0.08-0.25 mg kg-1 were achieved, and the correlation coefficient of determination was 0.9994-0.9997. The method had high precision and accuracy, with relative standard deviations (RSDs) and recoveries of 0.44 to 6.83% and 72.57 to 99.74%, respectively, suggesting the effectiveness of ultrasound-assisted extraction at increasing the solubility of the target analytes in the solvent system and the feasibility of UADSPE-RPLC-PDA for determining trace BAs in canned seafood.The profile of charge variants represents an important critical quality attribute of protein-based biopharmaceuticals, in particular of monoclonal antibodies, and must therefore becontrolled. In this work, 2D-LC methods for charge variant analysis were developed using a strong cation-exchange chromatography (SCX) as first dimension (1D) separation. Non-porous SCX (3 µm) particle columns and different mobile phases were evaluated using a test mixture of some standard proteins of different size and pI (comprising myoglobin, bovine serum albumin, cytochrome c, lysozyme and β-lactoglobulin) and two monoclonal IgG1 antibodies (NIST mAb and Secukinumab). The most promising 1D eluent for SCX was a salt-mediated pH-gradient system using a ternary mobile phase system with 2-(N-morpholino)ethanesulfonic acid, 1,3-diamino-2-propanol and sodium chloride. For the second dimension (2D), a desalting reversed-phase liquid chromatography (RP-LC) was chosen to enable the hyphenation of the charge variant separation with mass sbled to identify different glycoforms and some major charge variants of the antibody at the intact protein level as well as on the subunit level (Fc/2, Lc, Fd’) in a middle-up approach by 2D-LC-ESI-MS analysis.The separation and purification of biologically-active compounds from natural sources is of interest because such molecules find wide application in the pharmaceutical sector and in other industrial areas. Herein, a facile and novel approach was described for rapid fabrication of C18-functionalized magnetic nanocomposites (C18-MNCs) based on one-step aqueous coating of C18-Val-Lys-Val-Lys-Val-Lys (C18-VK-VI) for the highly selective enrichment of low-abundance endogenous peptides from biological samples. C18-VK-VI can readily self-assemble into complete monolayers mainly composed of β-sheets with C18 hydrophobic chains erecting on the surface of GO@Fe3O4 MNCs under the physiological conditions. The resulting C18VK-VI-GO@Fe3O4 MNCs exhibited good performance for peptides enrichment from digests of standard protein (myoglobin, MYO) and human serum, such as high sensitivity (0.05 fmol μL-1) and selectivity (mass ratio of MYO digests and MYO = 1500), rapid separation, and good reproducibility. Such a simple mild and rapid one-step aqueous coating method on the basis of oligopeptides self-assembly showed great potential in surface functionalization of various nanoadsorbents for proteome/peptidome researches.

    We extended the agent-based model, SpatioTemporal Human Activity Model (STHAM), for simulating SARS-CoV-2 transmission dynamics.

    Here we present preliminary STHAM simulation results that reproduce the overall trends observed in the Wasatch Front (Utah, United States of America) for the general population. The results presented here clearly indicate that human activity patterns are important in predicting the rate of infection for different demographic groups in the population.

    Future work in pandemic simulations should use empirical human activity data for agent-based techniques.In present study, chitinolytic bacteria were employed to bioaugment the biogas production from fungal pretreated agricultural residues. The fungal pretreatment of wheat and pearl millet straw was done by Chaetomium globosporum. Pretreated straw were digested anaerobically at batch scale with and without the presence of chitinolytic bacteria. Contrary to untreated samples, the addition of chitionolytic bacteria with pretreated wheat and pearl millet straw provided 41 and 57% higher biogas yield. The study was further upscaled to continuous stirred tank reactors. At continuous scale too, wheat straw pretreated with Chaetomium globosporum combined with chitinolytic bacteria resulted in 16% higher biogas yield in contrast to untreated straw. Higher abundance of methanogens was detected in reactors running with pretreated wheat straw during microbial community analysis. The identified bacteria belonged mostly to Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, Proteobacteria phyla.
